i would be digging it in spring when it is just about to bud burst, this is generally the best time, depending where you are though and whether it needs to be done quickly in an emergency it should be ok given good after care, in my digging exp. its all about the after care, get as many roots and feeders as you can and keep it in the shade for a few weeks until signs of life start showing then slowly move it into more sun every week.

I would also say spring as its about to pop, if you can wait till then. However as Jamie says its all about the aftercare. The big one I have up at the moment was dug in January and other than a good dose of seasol it didnt get any special treatment & has powered on. They are slow but pretty hardy.
