Hi there crazy kids!!!. I was at a furniture store today but unfortunately I did not have my camera so I took a cutting. Does anyone know what this is. The seed pods have seeds inside that are glossy black about one and half times the size of a pea. The tree has a trunk reminiscent of a camelia with a grey brown trunk with faint mottling. Leaves have alternate venation with an entire margin that undulates slightly. Can anyone help.? I have never seen this tree before.

Hi,John.
I think its Harpulia pendula(or tulipwood)
And it is an Aussie native.

this one looks like 'Harpulia arborea' to me which is a PNG variety. just a slightly diferent shaped pod to the 'H.pendula' which is a N.Qld variety

Hey guys, you are both spot on. Thankyou very much!!! Apparently makes a great tree for streetscapes and the timber is of a very high quality.
