I guess I did. The tree almost had a full canopy then I thought I saw something else in it :(

If thats the canopy you developed since January, I'd imagine that you can grow it back again within a year or so...

Well I thought the V I made earlier is still too high for the broom style so I cut one side of it off and also carved it down and would hope to turn it to a single trunk line. It just looks so severe now.

Privet is so hardy. I can where it's going too. Keep it warm and feed it up, mines growing like... a weed :? :lol:

Rewire plenty of movement into the shoots before they harden.

It looks fine. It will be better than the original eventually but as Anja said put some movement into that new leader and just let it grow back again :D

Haha very ironic. Privets are classified as weeds here in QLD so as many other "good for bonsai" trees.

Thanks for encouragement guys.

gday DK :)

i dont see this as a problem, as you said the V cut was a wee bit high, i can see where you were heading to with the single trunk line though, i wouldnt put to much movement in the leader other than subtle curves as the lower trunk doesnt show lots of movement, honestly i would consider the V cut again probably 3 inches above the nebari, this will give you the size capacity to fill the tree out in a broom style, similar to my celtis that i am working with at the moment.

see here ----> viewtopic.php?f=104&t=3461&hilit=celtis+broom&start=30

looking forward to seeing where you go, remember the broom style can be a bit tricky to pull of convincingly but i reckon it is well worth the time and effort putting into them as a good broom is something you dont see all the time ;)

Yes Jamie, I remember that broom celtis of yours from last dig in sunshine coast. Also the pics from that post are very inspirational. I will definitely consider that road.

gday DK :)

i have come back to this thread a few times now looking at the tree, i reckon the front you had chosen first is the way to go, it shows better nebari and flare, if you go with that as the front and V cut you could probably keep that first left hand branch as your horizontal branching in the broom, if you decide to go that way, either option broom or informal will work! ;)

Thanks for the hint on the choice of front. Good suggestion there Jamie.
