i have just repotted these 3 mugos, 3 weeks ago. its the first pot for all of them and i will now get on with the buissness of refining them over the next  years. i followed vance woods advice on repotting mugos middle of dec to end of jan. but decided to split it with walter palls advice not to cut anything off or style. where as vance says he does all of the above and his trees just kick butt. in any case my mugos are kicking butt with a much richer green now than you see in the photos. next years buds are a beautiful hazelnut colour and swelling. these are all great signs. oh by the way did i forget to mention; the roots got naked :P

NUMBER 1: training for shohin. (i think)

You planning to keep the future pads at their current angles?

I'm very partial to cascades but No2 looks like it has got a lot of potential - can you give us a look at it from the different sides please Antonio?

Hi Antonio,

My 2 cent:

With tree number 2, it looks dynamic and has strong features. I like
that in a pine bonsai. In photo 281220082257.jpg, the lowest branch
looks like it needs some more development to catch up with the second
lowest one? Are you thinking about slowing down the others to get this
one going? Or you plan to get rid of it later?

I am also a bit not at peace with the last abrupt bend of the top. I
could not articulate it more, but I think this somehow reduces the maturity
of the whole structure. But I do not have a suggestion though.

It is just my opinion, please disregard them at will :)

The semi-cascade, tree number 3 is a knock-out for me. I wish it were mine!

But I do think that the two long branches at the back do not contribute
anything to the overall image Antonio?

Please tell us how you managed to get hold of this tree? :)

Cheers.

viet thanks for the questions. firstly number 2 was pre bonsai stock from "the imagination tree" when paul still had it. $35.00 august 2006. it was approx 320mm tall. i have over that time reduced the top and built up the bottom end. now as i use lower branches as sacrafices, i try to ramify them as well. not the optimum sacrafice, but i try to practice various things; growing, ramifying, wiring and hopefully = deadwood. all while its fattening my bottom end a little. the apex as you see it is not the apex, but only another sacrafice. realisticly it needed to have been decandled but i'll have to settle for a hard prune in winter if i feel its healthy enough. all will be brought into perspective in the realm of faking a yamadori. in time. again thanks for chewin the fat. :D heres a couple of pics. back then. :D

and for number three; that came from conifergardens also $35.00. :D this tree was styled for a raw material 1st styling competition. i barely took anything off bar a few branches and some needles. so as to produce as full an image as possible of this immature foliage for the competition. again some of what you see now on my trees is there for a purpose but is not the final image. this one as a cascade has huge balancing challenges to keep the bottom of the cascade strong and bulk your base up at the same time so various sacrafices are juggled and hence ramify. :D

heres a b4 and after update of number 2. started the work new years day and finished this morn. in winter it will be carved and then the upper section of trunk compressed a tad tighter. i do have a couple of new leaders ready to go if need be. i will also decide wether thats enough for the sacrafices. :D 8-)
