This tree was dug from LLKs garden in 2008 (with her permission). It has been in this pot since then and I thought it being a nice day I would work on a tree rather than my car project.
I have a PK bag pot to put it in and will attempt to pot it in August.

Nice days work Peter
Are you going to do anything to reduce the straightness of the Branch?
Maybe Shari and carving on it as I doubt you can bend it that much due to to its size

Ken,
Yes I will probably do some more carving to help with the staightness of that branch as I did with the taper problem. Most of the day was taken up with finding the live veins and then the carving, the under side and back have a lot more carving.

Good work Peter,
This is one of the most difficult things for me. Looking at a mess of a tree and finding the courage to cut most of it off. I just dont know where to start.
Looks great and it's now on its way.

SUPER !! Thanks for posting that Sabina.
It'll end up a really top class bonsai. No advice from me, coz I know from watching you over the many years that in the end you know best. I look forward to the next installment.

Adam,
It is one of the hardest things to do. I spent a lot of time on junipers early in my Bonsai days to build my confidence. To me it is still a long process and I do not always get it right the first time. I decided the primary styling on this tree was the carving and the foliage will fill later.
Peter
PS Thanks Lisa for the material and your feedback.

Adam,
I once spent 6 months with a student on one of my junipers with no progression of their skill although the Juniper had a good result in the end.
My concern was why bother imparting my knowledge.

Hi Peter,
I am sorry that the experience left you feeling that way. I remember reading a quote from Mustard seed regarding landscaping, 'you need to search thru a thousand rocks to find but one' I never understood that sentence until many years later when I designed & built my parents garden. I had access to a quarry and all the rip rock I wanted. It took 3months to find all the pieces that made up the almost 10tonne of rock that I used in the garden, finding the 3 key pieces took the longest time. I finally learnt the lesson that I had read all those years before.

G,day Matt and Peter.
My late father once said to me, when as a young man I said how will I know?
He said with the passage of time, you will find whether you have taught or been taught. Learnt from what you were taught, or have taught from what you have learned.
I used to think drunk again then one day it dawned on me. Teach all you can to those that will listen. Then you will learn more .
As the late great John.Y. Naka said to learn more about Bonsai teach it.
Cheers

Pup
edit Ps very nice Peter, I hope you keep us updated. This will one day rival your Eucalyptus,

Thank you for the feedback,
Matt and Pup,
I am sure I will get over it.
Some people can teach and some ( like me ) shouldn't.
