Starting again with a large swampy.

So we all know Swampy’s are very tough, and even tougher to kill, and I have heard from someone whom I hold in quite high regard that in Qld they are able to be worked on at any time of the year…. Not that I doubt this person at all, but wanting some opinions :)
I’ve got a reasonably large one, and I want to cut ALL the branches off and start afresh with it. I have just let it hang out for the last 6 months or so and have slowly put together a few ideas as to how I would like it to look. I was thinking about cutting all the branches off and seeing what it pops with in spring…
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks guys
Nathan.

Nathan,

I do not have any experience with the swamp cypress or have one in my collection and I wish to work on one in future. Here is a very interesting post on a bald or swamp cypress on the IBC, hope it wills give you another idea.

gday nath :)

as with all trees there is a best time to work on them, even in our climate! as for chopping them off now and waiting it could be doe, i wouldnt expect the masses of new growth we do when in a good growing season though! i would be game enough to d it now for sure, i have one out back that will need it actually! but i will be waiting for it to show signs of bud burst before i do any chopping. generally this is the best time as they will show quick results.

during the cooler months what happens with a tree is its onergy will be sent down into the lower areas such as the root system. here it will wait until it is warm enough then send that energ back up and start growing again. if you wait till then you will have strong growth, good interodal length and plenty of options.
if you do it now you have the possibilty of not gettting buds where they are needed and coarse growth.

Thanks guys :)
I wasn’t so much wanting to get an explosion now, but maybe I will wait until after the days start to warm up again :) Later july-ish sounds good.
I figured it would be fine as far as survival goes, but waiting to get more options is certainly worthwhile I reckon!!
