How often do you defoliate? The local bonsai club told me to defoliate all figs EXCEPT Benjaminas, so I an interested in what you do, as yours is lovely and obviously has not suffered from being defoliated!

Glenda I tend to agree with them, the reason I defoiliated this was I wanted to give it a full wire. I find it a lot easier to do a full wire with no foliage, why they would say not to defoliate them is they may not come back with smaller leaves. Sometimes they can have some of their smaller branches die off, I might add that when I did this tree I did not lose too many.

Cheers

Rod... :)

i love this tree naked, this is the thing i am talking about when i speak of figs being defoliated and me imagining deciduous trees :D

seriously this tree is even more impressive in real life! so is his other :D

i tend to agree with being cautious on defoliating benji, i have a couple and have completely defoliated both, revoving the growing tips aswell, they came back no probs but i have lost small branches aswell. generally it is negatable and not a problem, but occasionally it can be, the other thing i have found with benji is that when defoliated they can decide to bud back but on some areas they reshoot from the cut tip and choose to extend from that tip and not bud where you want to, in other words they can be eradict.

all in all i have had decent luck with them.
