Cupressus sempervirens - By Pup

hi mate, could be a juniperus chinesis "sky rocket" or similar. even a chamaecyparis. hopefully joel popes up and corrects me as i dont think i am right about it.

i would be confident in saying it is a juniper chinesis, one of the "pencil" like styles, sky rocket, spartan or similar. there are a few up here aswell that i have been interested in but tend to stay away as the vertical habit of them will never be easy to style a tree no matter how much wiring is done.

Looks more like the Cupressus sempervirens, of which there are many cultivars. Most of them are pyramidal in growth. They do have plenty of fruit.

The Golden pencil pine is the most common, as it had a large commecial value as a garden tree.

I agree with Cupressus species, and most likely sempervirens. Jamie, the junipers have more berry-like strobilli. The bigger "soccer ball" shaped cones on this suggest Cupressus.

ps. i was right bout the growth habit though wasnt i? they can be hard to style as the habit will always want to go vertical?

Even if you get something wrong you are narrowing it down. Plus its fun and, as you said, you get to learn.

The growth habit is similar. Both would be called "fastigiate" but the Juniperus would be more narrow.

Trying to I.D. trees is fun!

Hi Jester , yes it a Cupressus Sempervirens "Stricta" a cultivated form of the Italian Cypress , Mediterranean Cypress , Funereal Cypress .Cheers Alpine
