hi everyone, this is my first post so we'll see how i go. i got given this lilly pilly a couple of years ago & aside from repotting and some pinching i havent really done much to it. any ideas? tree is 40 cm tall & 4cm at the base. i am thinking about cutting down to the first branch. have also noticed some new growth just below that y section. cheers

maybe into a large grow box or pot to thicken up.

I was looking through the satsuki site that kc posted a link to and when I saw this tree I thought of yours. It could be something to aim for if you let it grow out and develop more ramification. An obvious difference is that your first branch comes off much too high to be a twin trunk. It would also be good to get some backbudding lower down in the top section.

i was thinking get some pvc pipe what ever size you wanted the the curve and put it in the bend leaning right and then and the wrap it up and pull the top right branch down?

Nev, chop it where you said too, and plant the top and then develop two trees. Lilly pilly shoot back all over, so you should not have any problems.

thanks all, this is the angle that is making me think cutting it back to the first branch is the right way to go & would plant the top 2 sections for sure.

I take it from this that they strike easily from cuttings. Up to what size will take as a cutting? I have access to some really big ones and was thinking of layering to make use of more than just the base. Any advice would be great.

As promised an uptodate picture. This was taken 2-20 pm 14=07=2010. The other Lilly Pilly is a struck cutting from 4 years ago. In need of re potting which will be done at the end of the month along with some other Shohin re pots.

As you can see they are very responsive to pruning.
