Camelia possibilities

hi guys,
The old girl has a healthy in the front yard, and im thinking of taking a layer off it, of one of the lower, thicker branches.
Just wondering if there are any tips on taking layers from camelia's in general, how long they take, when the best time is to it etc.
also, after taking the layer, what time frame would people recommend before i start work on it, such as trimming branches (if they are too long should i cut them back whilst layering or after) defoliation etc. i would think that not letting the branches flower during layering, and after taking the layer off would be a good way to go to try and develop the roots on that branch in particular/
any suggestions would be great, any and all info welcome.
