G'day all, don't throw away your egg shells, grind them up and put them on your plants or in your potting mix or fert cakes, they are full of Calcium, but I guess most already knew that. Cheers

Sounds good!

Careful not to breath em in and wash your hands after. Egg shells like chicken carry salmonella and when crushed and handled heavily the salmonella can become more active. Aside from that i'll be giving this a try.

Thanks very much for the info, DaveL, I did not know that, Crikey Sh....t, have to be more careful, I have been grinding them to powder in my food processor, the powder is that fine it floats in the air, things you learn about on here are amazing, thanks again.

You do not have to crush them put them in a liquid either water or a manure they will then be more affective. I notice also some of our members still SMOKE, if you are environmentally aware. Please dispose of the butts by soaking them in water for about a month, it helps if you start with boiling water. As with the eggshells put them well away from your living area. The cigarette butt liquid makes a very effective BUG killer and is not harmful to your plants. It does show what they do to you though.

Pup, I think some commercial insecticides contain nicotine. My mum has been putting egg shells broken up on her roses for years. As you water them, they slowly break down, releasing the calcium as they go.

had a go with egg shells years ago ,you may as well beleave in the tooth fairy

I crush my shells up & add them to the kitchen scraps then feed all that back to the chooks...

They like it and contrary to myth it doesnt encourage the chickens to eat there own eggs when layed.

and a handfull of eggshell in with your junipers does them a world of good too.

I toss my egg shells in a Chinese container,now with a lid on it so the kitten doesn't play with them. Periodically I put them through my Bamix nut grinder. I think by the time I get around to the job of reducing them to fine particles any self respecting salmonella has gone to god. I put a layer in the pot bottom when I am working with junipers and the rest in the compost bin. I will scatter some around Tariba's memorial rose as that must flourish. Also heard that human hair helps roses to grow.
