Hi all, I was thinking about doing some grafting this spring, and was wondering if it would work if when I was doing a side graft, that I put a PVA glue ( maybe Boncrete or Aquadhere ) around the outer edge where the bark is exposed, and gluing the scion to the stock, being careful not to put glue on the cambium and then sealing the graft with pva glue and wrap it up as usual . What do you reckon.

i would be cautious of gluing any free/heel grafts as there is a possibilty they wont take.. the few that i have done, i have used a plastecine mixed with vege oil to seal them with and that usually holds them in place rather well. out of twenty or so attempts at them i have onyl mananged to get a couple to take. it is a harder technique than first thoughts. if the cambium doesnt match up well it will cause some ugly areas that will only get worse.

what sort of trees are you trying to graft?

it might be easier to take some cuttings of the trees, get them to strike then use them to thread graft, i use a small plastic pot to hold the seedling then wire the pot to the tree and have the thread graft going through where it is needed. its a little hard to describe i will get a pic of what i mean tomorrow.

Hey Jamie, no mate, I was going to try and shorten a couple of Liquidambars, by taking the middle out.

i have actually heard of a japanese master i think doing something like this, he had a tree and the middle section was straight and boring so he decided to chop the middle out

i am pretty sure he got it to work, if i was going to do something like that i would drill a hole in the middle of the trunk, on both pieces and put a dowell or similar into to hold it tight then use a PVA wood glue, pva would be the strongest area, i wouldnt recommend doing any major bending work on it though

Thanks Jamie that is a good idea with the dowell, actually I might chop off a small live branch and strip the bark off and use it for the dowel, great idea mate, didn't think outside the square , did I.
