G'day everyone!
Just thought i'd share with you all and possibly extend an invitation to join me on an exciting dig at a place i came accross today .

The current landowner has just purchased the property from a guy who planted Redwoods, Swampy's, Cedars adn various types of 3 needle Pines to one day mill the timber.

I've been given exclusive access to dig whatever and whenever i like(apart from the larger Redwoods which the owner can keep!).

Some of the Swampy/Redwoods have been cut to about 1m from the ground and have great 4-6 inch trunks (and some are still 1inch trunks), and are/have rebudded to the ground, however a lot of the pines and Cedars are a bit leggy, but not too bad. All trees seem healthy, perhaps suffering from neglect, but will easily sharpen up with some TLC!

I'm having trouble with the exact id of these (ie, Swampy or Redwood, what type of cedar, what type of pine), so i've attached a few pics. If anyone can give a good ID on these it would be greatly appreciated.
Either way, i'm digging! PM me if you're interested aswell.

Go hard and make sure you get lots of pics to make the rest of us jealous.

If I was closer I would be there with spade in hand, I love collecting trees more than any other aspect of bonsai.

i think the pine is stone pine.

G'day mate - the last one doesn't look like a cedar - more like a small needle pine - maybe scots by the look of the bud.

Nice find Josh!!! Are the trunks interesting or straight up and down??? I might be interested...

Hey all,
There are hundreds of trees all up with all different sizes - from 2ft tall and up. All trunks are relatively straight, but as i said they are a bit leggy (but hopefully back bud will happen with tlc), but workable with either wire or bender for the smaller pines and Swampies/Redwood (still not confident with what they are).
I will probably also take a few of the taller pines with trunk diameters of about 4 inches and try to transplant them as garden specimens, then work on air layering - i just find this opportunity too good to miss.
All i know is that the pines are def not Radiata and are worth doing something with. God knows how much a nursery would charge for them.

The second last ones definitely look like Swampys especially the bark.

Josh, if you're talking about Dawn Redwood against swampy, in general, the Dawn Redwood has alternate leaves and the swampy has opposite leaves. At least, mine do anyway.

Looks like you have some redwoods there (def. not swamps). The Cedars you refering at are most likely Spruce. It hard to say for sure as the pics are a bit fuzzie.
What I charge for a good pine is about $150 which is not much for growing 4-5 years in the ground. That's only $30 a year!

Chris, thanks for the advice.
Just like to add in no way was i referring to any particular nurseries' prices. I must say that your nursery has some of the best stock in melb with appropriate prices.
I have a habit of only opening my mouth to change feet!
I will be right near you on Thurs and will drop in later in the afternoon to say hi. Make sure the kettle is on....
