Hutch, if you find one on the side of the road, just cut where you want, even up to several inches diameter, put in a bucket of water for 3-4 weeks then in to a pot, wulla, you have a willow. easy

also when u say put in a bucket of water, I assume u mean about 1/3 in the water and 2/3 out. Is that all that is needed?? gee that seems so simple?

Mick,
Do you mean cutting off at the base of the trunk like with olives or can you just chop any branch you choose and soak?
I read somewhere that olives only work with this technique if cut at the trunk.
Is it the same with willows?

just cut the branch where you want the roots to start, and where you want the trunk to finish. All into a bucket only has to be 1-2 inches or so full, just keep a eye on the water level though. yeh, use the water for your cuttings of other trees.
I have some contorted willows in a bucket.

Hi Hutch
There is some discussion about this here

And various links to other discussions about it are also in that thread.
