Hi everyone,

I recently read a few things online about Prunus Mume or Japanese Flowering Apricot only having a n average lifespan of about 20 years. is this true? has anyoen heard of this?

seems like this is a bit of a disappointment if it is true!

Hi Astro, in Japan I saw a lot of very old prunus mume bonsai they were way past 20 years thats for certain. I know that cherries as garden trees dont live for ever, I had to take one out here when we first moved in but I would guess it was around the 60-70 year mark and the soil around it was very compacted by a car park. I would say at 20 years a prunus is only just starting to be beautiful.

Theoretically any tree in a bonsai pot will live forever so i would not be too concerned

20 Years is the quoted expected life span of Japanese Flowering Apricot, Prunus Mume in any description that gives a life span

The tree grows rapidly to achieve a mature height of 20 feet. Its short lifespan of loveliness is 20 years

Like I siad though Theoreticly it can live forever as bonsai!

I was just reading an article about a dying 1000 year old Prunus Mume in China.. although the article also mentioned most old Prunus Mume lived to 200 - 300 yrs old.. don't know how accurate that is
