I accquired this European ash a couple months back. Thinking of airlayering to make a few trees out of this one. I got plan for where to make the airlayers.
I need help with the stump. It has a good basal flare and there seem to be more under the soil line. It just that the stump is too straight and only has one low branch. Looks like severe carving is needed. Any suggestion for this is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
DK

that middle section might be good for a small fat raft.

Can you use the stump section as the start of a broom Style?
Does Ash work for broom? I ahve do not have one myself, but always an option with a striaght lower trunk

The airlayers have been done. Gsss the bark is very thick - about 7mm. It's been cold in the last few days and some leaves turn yellow and dropped. Let's hope it's ok.

gday DK
thats the go champ, not only will you have a better tree for it, but two more!! the bark being thick is usually a good thing, if the cambium is thick it should have a lot of energy to push new roots

Hi KVAN
I have a flowering ash in front yard that I would like to air layer....I see you have used plastic pots. Can you please tell me...did you do the normal thing with moss and plastic etc and then tie the pot on...if so....why the pot. For some reason I like you method but I don't know why...PLEASE EXPLAIN

Hi Loretta. Yes I did the usual things- ring bark and sphagnum moss etc... I use the plastic pots as it is relatively easier to attach a lot more moss/soil. Also It would help the watering and even fertilising easier (when the roots are mature enough, they will draw a lot of water and fertilising will help with further root development and health of the layers).
