Hi Folks

I need more of your advice please. The branch on the right is dead. I would like some ideas of where to trim it to keep it as an informal upright or what ever other style you deem appropriate.

Hi Fred, can you possibly post some more pics from different sides of the tree plse.That way people can give you better advice. Also what do you want to achieve with the tree- just remove the dead branch or a total restyle-maybe a trunk chop? Craig

Or maybe airlay just below the dead branch.

I think it needs a restyle.

I will have to wait until tomorrow to photograph it from the other three sides. I will then post these pics.

G'day Fred I think you should spread the branches just slightly with wire and grow the tree as an informal broom. Nothofagus are not that happy about being wired at least our local one anyway. I wouldn't work the tree too hard and mainly maintain shape with pruning.

Originally the tree was in a broom style with less branches but I thought it might be a candidate for an Informal upright with the dead bottom branch jinned.

Your suggestion makes good sense. Presumably I will need to remove the dead branch completely.

I have attached a pic of how the tree was when first potted two years ago.

with a bit of wiring it would go good as broom style i reckon, do beech back bud well or at all?

This Native Beech hasn't but a Mountain Beech I have tends back bud. I guess it is the case of finding the optimal growing conditions for this group.
