This is a cutting from a tree growing near my mum's house. The owner thought it was a Japanese maple, but now it is getting it's leaves back I'm not so sure. Those green pom poms seem to dry out and fall to the ground - I'm guessing they are seed pods. The leaf is palmate shaped but is just pure green - not hint of red like the 2 small trees I have at home. Any ideas anyone ?

Hi Craig yes the pom poms turn into spiky balls which is the giveaway I believe. Do you know if they can be air layered ?

not the plane trees I have seen, they look more like a liquid amber leaf(the plane tree that is).
Im not sure with it being a liquid amber either though, generally liquid ambers have a fuller leaf and not so acutely shaped.
I would be checking out all the varietys of japanese maple, just cause it doesnt have the red colours doesnt mean it is not a japanese maple, just not the J.R.M.

seems I am mistaken, a quick google search and found these.
I have a planetree here and was always under the assumption it was the oriental, after the quick search found it is london planetree.
here you go, london with the less palmate look, oriental with deeper serrations and the seed

Liquidambars come in many guises - including 3 lobe leaf varieties, and numerous varieties of five lobe. The buds and (young) bark on your tree look very like the buds and bark on my 5 lobe ones.
