grafting possibilities

hey,
do trees have to be of a similiar species to be grafted, or could some one be really strange and make a mixed tree, like maple, oak, beech, and other leafy trees, or pine and other, needle, scaley trees?
if someone could do that it would be quite amazing, with one main branch from a different species it could look amazing if they bunched up and mixed,
