hey,
do trees have to be of a similiar species to be grafted, or could some one be really strange and make a mixed tree, like maple, oak, beech, and other leafy trees, or pine and other, needle, scaley trees?
if someone could do that it would be quite amazing, with one main branch from a different species it could look amazing if they bunched up and mixed,

Apart from some rare instances, trees to have to be of the same genus. Even then many grafts will not take, or will break down over time between certain species. For example some pines will not graft successfully with other pines, or almond/peach is compatable but almond/apricot is not even though they are all pretty closely related. This can also occur between different varieties of the same tree in some circumstances.

there's alot in grafting. it's not just taking a knife and cut and paste. you will have to find out if it is compatible too which sometimes can be hard.
