No Tony, they are both purple and I've had them for about 17 years. I think I'll take some leaves to the nursery to be identified...I think I might need something like Condifor or something. I just noticed this morning I have a plague, they are in my crepe myrtle bonsai and my daughter noticed last night they are in my murraya hedges which practically surround my yard. A lot of these pests are just a seasonal events and soon pass but I don't want my bonsai affected. I'll get on to it today.

try to keep them out from the sun a bit.

i think the bumpy leaf is cause by too much sun. that what i realize when i growing up in malaysia.

the boug that receive 1 whole days sun is a bit bumpy
and the boug that receive a bit less sun looks fine (but have to watch out for caterpillars)

maybe that's the reason.

Thanks Dumper...the plants are in dappled shade at the moment, hopefully this will help.

i have noticed after barerooting, or repotting they do this.

Also if they are not receiving enough food.

the first is obviously because they have no root system to uptake enough of the "good stuff" you are giving them. the second obviously is a lack of fertilizer, both meaning, they are not getting enough feed.

I have also noticed that with feeding, even with a good root system, if they dont get enough water they tend to "crinkle" like what you are seeing here, which could be that the water content is not high enough to carry the nutrient for proper growth.

This is just my experience, but perhaps you can take something from it.

Hi Ken,
The particular bougs in question have always been in full sun (for years)

Hi Gareth,

Funny you should say that, as I repotted them into diatomite (for the first time) and they have gone backwards ever since even though I have been fertilizing. I think on the weekend I'll repot into 50/50...it's too hot up here to use straight diatomite...it dries out too quickly.

Hi Loretta,

I use mostly diatomite, but mix about 25% normal potting mix in, with some slow release and other fertilizer. so it does have a good level of water retention, but it isn't as hot here on the mid north coast, so i can get away with less organic matter.

You could try, instead of repotting ( as i said this would damage of at the very disturb the fine feeder roots used for moisture and nutrient uptake) try watering with a mixture of water and fine clay particles, either diatomite or zeolite dust, or just normal clay, or even try grinding up some spag and watering it in, the small particles will get caught in the mix and retain moisture.

Something i picked up from gardening Australia.

Perhaps it might work for you, a hell of lot less trouble than repotting a boug, especially if it is a big one, like mine which has a solid truck about 15-20cm across.

Thanks Gareth, I'll try that on the weekend. I have some spag moss in the shed.

Loretta,

All my bougs are in 100% diatomite and love it. Bougs don't usually like wet feet.
