Hello people, iv had this (and two other) chrysanthemum's in ROR training for 5 months now. They happily survived winter and this is what i found when stripped today. . . . (sorry about the blur!)
** It was sripped to remove excess shpag moss and clay/peat muck, (mostly gone in pics).
Comments and advice would be great! Repacked

Hi Lucas , thats a good result . When i do root over rock i simply strap the roots with parcel string or hemp string ,then pot into a large deep pot .I don't use muck on this combo ,however i used too .I find they grow just as well without any muck . Did this plant have any roots or did you plant it with the idea of producing roots ? .Cheers Alpineart

Hey Alpineart, thanks for sharing! This had very little roots to begin with, the shallow pot its in is always kept in a sand/water tray.

Looks like this one has come along nicely since you say it had minimal roots! are you only watering the lower section of the pot? well mostly the lower section with a little in the top? i ask as the roots that are to clasp the rock if only minimal water in the top and mostly in the lower section will cause the roots to search for water and doing this will help with that

im a lil more worried about a different attempt of 'training roots'!....
i have a 2ft tall dead trunk that iv wrapped in soil and foil and want a PJ to send roots all the way down!!!!!
(( i may need a drip set-up to keep the moisture level up all the way down!!!!))

its raining here too! anyways, I can see what you are doing with the fig going over the dead trunk, if this was my little project, i would plant the fig into pvc piping, 100mm would be fine, and let it grow for a year, this will give you some very long roots, which you could then have the plant at the top of the tree, wrap the roots around where they need to be then do your foil thing to get the roots to clamp down to the trunk

other wise your other option could be is to let hte tree throw heaps of low shoots, let them extend over two foot or the height of the trunk you want them and then plant the trunk under the soil of your deadwood, wrap the branches around the tree, bring them all back together at the top of the tree and fuse them in place to create the "new trunk" at the top

she is mighty healthy!!!! its funny, a good friend was over earlier and was breaking its balls! (saying it looks like cabbage and a 'weed') =P

i laughed it off and we moved on..... (i doubt he's seen the pics that inspired me =)

It will be good just takes time, the last one looks like it has some nice tight internode length! which is good for ramification, I have found one prob with tight internodes is that it can take a lot longer if you need to extend the branch, my clero are like that, I am growing out a semi cascade branch and the internodes are only a couple of mm between each other making it take a tad longer, I must admit though, now it is going again it is still extending somewhere around the 1 - 1.5cm a day
