Hi there bought this bonsai today I know it's a buxus but I have no clue what exact specie any help would be appreciated.

would of been quicker if i seen the pots earlier very distinctive trees the old buxus harladii, speaking of which, this one looks rather solid, can we get a pic of the whole tree? with a plain background if possible??

Hey guys here we go as promised. Just did some wiring to the tree my first ever wiring. So tell me what you think:) I lost a couple shoots but tried my best not to. How long do you think I should leave this wire on for??

I'm pretty sure it's a korean box. That one is pretty meaty considering they are very slow growing.

jeff, I had to take a look at the korean box, it seems the info that keeps coming up for the Kor. buxus is buxus microphylla, which seems to be similar, but i still reckon this is harlandii mate, that bark is a dead give away to me anyways, I have/had a few of them over time.

Cay, your tree looks very healthy, what do you see for this tree? I see you have gone for a broom style which can work very well with this species, what you need to do though is let the tree grow strong, then cut back, grow strong, cut back, this way you will build ramification, it also looks like you have a lot of branches coming from the same area of the trunk, which will cause some major reverse taper with this species, especially the way it corks up. reverse taper is where the tree thickens above the lower trunk creating a buldge. which isnt what you are after.

Hi Jamie I've read what you said and appreciate the advice you said it looks like there are too many branches coming from the one area of the trunk and this could build up. Are there any branches you recommend I remove. Also I am going with the broom style but the problem is I have three thick branches do you know what I should do with these.

heres what I can see, first the mud map in redlines is what I would cut off, the blue line is what I will choose as a trunk line, from what I can see from the pic anyways

this is the virt, I reckon give it a few years and you could have something close.

looks like a good idea so what you're saying is I should cut off my very thick branch on the left?? and you say I should use a thin branch as the trunk line??

hi mate

yes that thick branch on the left that is diagonal i would remove the hefty part of it, there is a small branch coming of that thick one which you could use as the lowest branch for the broom. there is also a branch on the right that i would use in the overall design, then work out the trunkline, which i would go as shown in the blue line, I dont know whay that red line is there that crosses the blue line, cant remember if it was there for a reason once you work out how the trunk line is that your going to take, then select branches which will work in the overall design working with the the trunk as the main which will have the sub branches will come from
