This setting apparently reminds our club president of one of the gorges, her and some other's took a boat trip on in China.
But to me it is a rock setting of a gorge where I used to work Wittenoom. Do not try to find it on the map, They have taken it of all maps unless you have an old one.

The problem was the tree. It is a Chinese elm, at the time of setting this up. I had no small Natives, and now it is too firmly attached to the rock which is, 32cm high and 18 cm at the widest part.

The suiban tray is Japanese, it was given to me many years ago by a very good friend, who has since passed to the great void.

Hi Pup , very nice setting .I like the simplicity of the design .I have a few in the oven using Chinese Elm root cuttings which reminds me i best get out there and check their progress.Cheers Alpine

G,day Tony it is actualy sitting in a cavity in the rock. It is classed as an Ishizuki ( rock planting ) there are two types root over rock or root on rock.

Root over rock the roots clasp the rock and go down into the container, root on rock is where the tree is planted on the rock and it is supported wholey by it own root sytem on the rock and soil within.

Nice one Pup, could I suggest just a little an accent or two higher up to bring the rest of the rock to life. I like how the rock ends ubrutly at the top.

Looks good Pup, and yep - definitely reminds me of the Pilbara region. The stark red and ruggedness of the rock and the small planting looks like a lot of the stunted trees you see growing on the side of a cliff/rock/hill in the Pilbara.

Yes, I know where Wittenoom is. I spent my first year (1975) in Oz at Cape Lambert, then another 9 years in Goldsworthy (east of Port Hedland. Just like Wittenoom, Goldsworthy no longer exists. The Iron Ore ran out, they demolished the town, ripped up the roads and left. It's even very difficult to find it on Google Earth unless you know where it was. Went to Wittenoom during that first year in Oz - along with Python Pool and Millstream (past Pyramid station).

i have tried but it gets too hot and nothing survives. I have put moss there from the bottom as this grew there naturally, it still struggles, but as I was told it is how it grows in China. I do know that, that high up the gorge plants do not survive either.

Looks great pup it simple but stunning. I love rock settings they really bring out the naturalness of bonsai.

Yes Taffy it was a very nice time with all those mines and towns. Now they fly in and fly out.

Shay Gap closed, along the same line as Goldsworthy to Port Headland. Fishing and hunting around Mill stream when it was just a water hole not a national park.
Pity Wittenoom was such a killer beautiful country and gorges, good fishing and hunting too.
Pigs goats and of course roos, and under ground mutton.

fortescue river station was another nice spot I think Mt Newman has changed a lot so I have been told by my son.

Yes Tong, I am aware of the academy in Sydney, but I live in Perth western Australian a long way to come

I am from Hong Kong. I moved here 6 monthes ago. I met Sifu phillip Tot before in Hong kong, very traditional sifu. So im glad i am finaly able to study with him at this Academy.

I always want to go to Perth. My friend tell me its very beautiful. Lot of Penjing or bonsai here? I will come to Perth soon I hope

G,day Tong you would be more than welcome. In May next year the National AABC convention is being held in Fremantle 23klms from Perth we have a Chinese Master coming for Demonstrations and workshops his name is Mr Lo.

The dates are Saturday 21st May Sunday 22nd May and work shops on Monday 23rd May.
