I have had this tree for a few years. Was purchased in a very poor state and did not have any ID with it. Any help to ID would be much appreciated Thanks

If It is deciduous then I think it is ash.

Fraxinus excelsior is probably misused amongst bonsai people.

F excelsior has big prominent black buds.

We call this F angustifolia var angustifolia at the collection or Desert ash.

Thanks for pointing that out Grant, so F excelsior has black buds and F angustifolia, which is closely related to excelsior has brown buds, good to know, thanks Craig
