hi guys,

as an off shoot of Mojo's thread about a shohin association of Australia a step in that direction may be to have a shohin specific section of the forum. so to keep things short and sweet to start with, give us a yes or no in the poll. and then we can look at keeping it simply shohin or go into other sections like shohin - evergreen, shohin - deciduous etc.

I'm not too sure about having a separate section just for Shohin.

Although a lot of members have a great interest in Shohin, it is only one of the height classes of Bonsai. If a separate section is added for Shohin, then what about all the other height classes - Mame, Kifu etc? If it's good enough for one height class to be added, then it has to be ok for the others.

It could also cause some division among members as the ones that have a separate section of their own could be seen as being 'elitist'. Then someone might decide they want separate sections for different trees - one for Maples, one for Eucalypts etc. My preference is Figs - can we have a section dedicated just to Ficus species?

I honestly think there is already an excellent balance of different sections here on Ausbonsai. In 'The Open Table', there is a topic there titled 'Drop in Sunday' and it's up to 97 pages already. Why not just start a thread on Shohin?

I'm not saying I'm against it - and I'd most likely contribute to it, but it could raise other issues.

By the way, could we have a seperate thread for Clip and Grow style trees? And also Penjing style as well? It just goes on and on.

Guys appreciate your passion and wish you all the best in your quest, my prefered tree is either LARGE or mini, but I still enjoy all the ones in between.

Yes we do need a shohin section, provided that it does not make the forum too congested or is a administrative headache for Steven, don't forget that we get use of this great site for free. Having a dedicateted section as opposed to a thread makes it easier to keep track of and reply to. Threads seem to drift off topic very easily as well, I should know I have hijacked a few!

There is a section on: Suiseki and Viewing Stones and Accent Plants and Moss with a total of 58 topics between them.
Both of those sections deserve a place here, I am sure Shohin does too.

Mojo I could not agree more. Suiseki is a fine art on its own moss and Lichen I thought was part of Bonsai in general.

So why not a Shohin mame and mini page?.

I have been watching this thread and the discussions about the Shohin Bonsai Association of Australia with great interest. I personally love shohin and smaller and would be interested in having a dedicated section on the board but I'm still not convinced that there is enough interest to warrant it. These 2 threads gained great momentum and then petered out... so in an effort to rekindle the fire I am putting this challenge out there;

If we can get 20 members or more to post at least 60 pictures of their shohin or smaller bonsai in this thread then I will arrange for the dedicated shohin forum to be created. Sound fair?

Hi, Steven, Your proposal sounds very fair - to establish that there is sufficient interest first and then build the infrastructure is a great way of encouraging people to post.

Personally I think the more sections there are the more ausbonsai will get cluttered up. If you write shohin in your topic or in your text then your posts will be very easy to find under the search function. To date there have been 1514 ausbonsai posts related to the word Shohin. Ficus alone have 2380 posts. Using your search button and checking the number of hits will give us a good idea of where partitioning the forum may be helpful and where it may not be.

Steven as Ash has said sounds fair I can do that.
However we do have a large amount of new comers to Bonsai who, would not know what Shohin Mame or Shito are, so to let them browse a section dedicated to them they would get an understanding. That way I am sure we could then justify a dedicated section.
If you use your criteria, Ash, for Suiseki, pots and benches and Mosses and Lichen then. Why have them Ash.

Edit is that 60 pictures of your miniatures, or 60 different trees, just so others will know. As I can do whatever

I agree, one can still use the progressions area to detail the specific changes to trees.

Apart from size what is the difference between shohin and any other bonsai, it seems to me that the same techniques apply whether the tree is 1m or 15cm.

Noah, that Willow Leaf Fig is looking nice, I reckon if you could get some branching in closer to the trunk on the 1st RHS branch, it would improve the tree a fair bit. And I still like that pot!

My Place is a bit of a Frankenstein's lab for shohin trees in development, I'll post some pics when I get a spare moment to wave the camera around.
