Pinus densiflora. Japanese Red Pine. New challenge for NBPCA

Hi all,
Here is a Red pine that has been donated to the collection.
It dates form the early 1950s and so could be an ex Koreschoff pine. It was initially styled in the 1970s by a previous owner in a workshop with John Naka.
It obviously needs some work but we will be concentrating on getting it back into good health first.

The picture shows the front as presented since the 1970s. The roots system however on this side is weak looking.
This will be an ongoing pictorial workshop and discussion for the next few years with the members of the Ausbonsai community.

Ooooh there are so many options for a restyle there its not funny. #5 and 7 Could easily make a nice literati or tilt them slightly and they become a different style Upright too
Going to be interesting to see where you go with this one over the next few years

A Hundred Views of Mt Fuji and I still can't figure out what to do with the damn thing.... Call in Hokusai.
View 1 suggests a radical tilt to the left - you didn't say which was the side with poor roots, but that may define the direction.
View 4 has the best trunk base. Maybe with this you'd get rid of the heavy left branch/trunk two thirds of the way up, and bring the top forwards. You'd get a different feel in the bark, with branch angles and such.
Beard-stroking moments.

Pinus densifora Japanese red pine
Hi all,
I thought I would run through our observations of this tree so you can see where we think this tree is leading us.
First. The existing front as shown.
Good points. Aged bark, evident age of tree, taper to the top, nice movement to the front from about halfway up, lots of branches and foliage.
Bad points. The sharp bend parallel to the ground, poor surface roots, poor base, Lowest branch on right comes from behind.
View 1.JPG
Second. Back or alternate front.
Good points. Good or better root system and lower trunk, nicer movement at end of sharp bend and above,
Bad points. Branch at the front 2/3rds the way up has an unnatural bend and is ugly, all the apex is going away.

OK; so how can we fix this?
After looking carefully we think the best way to go with this tree is to emphasise the existing movement in the trunk, use the best side showing the roots and tilt the tree to do away with the jarring straight portion.
Somewhere like this.

However today had another look and tilted it even more to the left and also more forward; like this.
