hi folks,
iam relatively new to this site, and by the way a fantastic one at that, i have got a squamata prostrata juniper, it was looking very very healthy and a great greeny color all of a sudden in the last few weeks it tends to go a grey white color. something that i just cant work out as it comes and goes. sometimes it comes when the tree is in the sun or shade then goes when the tree is in the sun or shade, could this be a case of overing watering, i have once been told that they can go white if over watering. can someone please suggest something. even if you dont know just say something to make me feel better.
sorry there are no pics to help you out but cant find camera.

ty.

gday and welcome ty

squamata prostrata can show signs of what u say, is it showing new growth at all mate i have one in training for a cascade when pruned back they can look a little sad so to speak but when reshooting it comes along fine. a pic would be a great help for us to help u mate.full sun is where it should be for best results but dont over water mate scrape the top of ur pot if there seems to be dampness dont water and of course if dry give it a good drink.are u fertilising at all and if so what are u using.

cheers mick

"even if you dont know just say something to make me feel better."

That has to be one of the funniest things I have heard on here.

Is it the whole plant of just specific branches?

If it is looking "very very healthy" then my friend it is most probably on its way out. If it is just looking unhealthy there is a good chance of recovery.

You description "sometimes it comes when the tree is in the sun or shade then goes when the tree is in the sun or shade" has me a bit worried, it sounds as if it gets moved around a fair bit. Perhaps it is telling you, to find it a place and leave it so it can adjust.
I do not believe that is the only problem though, perhaps others.

gday again,

sorry about the poor description, the tree is under a shade cloth type of thing, it is not the moving around as it does stay in the one spot, although the tree does get all the morning sun and later in the day gets shade once the sun moves. is it possible that this is the problem or should i just keep it in the full sun. Also it is only on 2 branches not the full tree. as far as i know there is no other problems with it but then im not a tree doctor if there is such a thing.
thanks heaps guys will keep my eyes wide open. any more thoughts please pass it on. love what we do.

Juniper Shoud have no problem being outside in full sun all day

I have not seen and heard what you describe, but make sure the soil is well draining and does not stay wet

Wait till it is only slighlty damp before re watering

Maybe check in between the needles for tiny parasites. Lately i've been getting little white mites in mine; the branch starts to go a slight off colour. Give them a squirt of insecticide that won't hurt the plant if you find anything.
