I have finally decided that I need to air layer my black pine as the center of the trunk is too long between layers. Is it a good idea to start air layer now for this species or should I wait a bit.

A front view of the plant is in my gallery. I am on my phone and can't post
At the moment.

Cheers
Fish

Yes I woud put one on now as it can take over a year depending on How old the tree is.
If young section of bark whenre you wish to layer (,10 years), then it should be OK in only a few minths, but if the section has old Mature bark then it can take a verry long time

Well, I did it. My first "technical" procedure on a Bonsai. After following your advice, I conducted my first Air Layer. So HOPEFULLY in a couple of months, I can remove the pot and have two healthy specimens. Thanks for advice and here is hoping.

I have attached the pics, please let me know if I should have done something different.

I'd now take a franklins bag and wrap it around the airlayer, taping it shut above and below the pot. It keeps the humidity up as well as being a reservoir for watering it through a little hole at the top. You have probably already done that, thought I'd mention though.

I was going to say in the other thread, you should air-layer this section off. Nice whorl to work there.

Thanks Mitchell, I haven't done that with the bag, I shall do it now. Great idea.
