[ID] Any ideas as to what this might be?

Post by Tinmonkey »

A few weeks back I was chatting to a farmer I was doing some work for about bonsai.
Today I went back to do some more work and at the end of the day he comes up and hands me this.
He had bare rooted it and put it in a plastic bag.
I got it home as soon as possible and soaked it in a seasol bath for a while then potted it up.
I'm not too optomistic about its survival chances but I would like to know what it is none the less.

Hi there,
This looks very much like a Box elder maple (Acer negundo). It seems like a great find but sadly they can be dificult to grow as bonsai simply because the leaves and internodes are often too large. Im sure many have tried this species, so I hope someone has some good gorwing techniques to offer you.

I have seen one that I liked and it showed that the leaves do reduce enough for a medium sized tree.
They ae a tough tree. Prune the same as any maple and they can handle almost full sun.
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.
