hey guys and girls, im purchasing a tree over the weekend i have 250 to spend and i am going to bonsai south,im looking at figs and maples and elms,i want to buy a semi mature tree as i have lots of young trees,is there any advice that you can give me to look for before buying such as branches roots leaves etc as when i go to buy a tree i get stumped about what to buy as it is sometimes hard to see the tree in it. any help would be great thankyou

I visited Leong at BS a couple of days ago and he has some excellent stock at the moment. He showed me some Juni's that would blow your mind but your $250 would only get 1/4 of a tree

If I were you I would set aside at least 2 hours and just spend your time walking around and studying the trees until one 'jumps out at you'.

Leong has just released his new book - Pine bonsai in the temperate climate, that looks very impressive. Maybe get a copy of that ($50) and spend the rest on a pine?

Hey Griffo. How'd you go over the weekend find anything? Are you after a bonsai thats already established or something you can work on your self? For 250 I'd buy something that was already matured in a growing box then transplant it into a nice size pot. Pot might blow your budget if you spend the whole 250 on the tree. But if you have it in a growing box then you could keep it in there for a while till it gets use to your area then transplant it into a good looking pot once you've saved a bit more. I'd want another fig or olive tree hmm or maybe a new zealand xmas tree and I'd be looking out for something that has a nice trunk line and small bright green leaves with no bugs or infection signs.
