Sounds great for a fig :-)

Watch the tree for signs of it drying out, and water appropriately.

From my experience figs can be potted in most any medium. Depending on the med, adjust watering levels. Depending what i used to pot it, I may have a humidity/water tray under it, have the pot half submerged, or water heavily.

I just pot them in anything I have... sand , gravel, soil, whatever is lying around. They all do fine.

So do you keep a try under it full of water, then evaporation keeps local humidity high around the plant, sounds good, does this promote aerial roots, more leaf growth?

Here in Queensland you will need to keep the tray full of gravel to prevent mozzies breeding. It will still fill with water, though!
