I have had this tree on this site before asking about the unusual bulges, without much reaction. Maybe the following may get a bite .

I picked this Eucalypt up from a nursery about 8 years ago. I was concerned when it started to bulge all over the trunk which gradually has moved up the trunk. It doesn’t seem to have affect is health. Because of these bulges I haven’t done much with until today.

As you can see it had a unattractive root on it, so I decided to use this as the front and carve it into submission. As you can see I have hollow out the trunk and carved the top and opened the base.

wow really cool man, really like the carving, what tools did you use ?

I have two E. sideroxylon which have similar growths on them. I thought that they are lignotubers. I find that they are continually sending out shoots, especially after pruning.

your spot on peter, they are lignotubers, it where the tree store energy for lean times, a lot of Australia trees have these growths on them.

I really like the last image here: very natural indeed, and the leaves are already a great size for Bonsai!

As you and others have suggested, I reckon your lumpy bits are lignotubers, although it is odd to see them so far up the trunk. Perhaps it is a trait that is particular to this species or even this individual tree. I don't know the Grey Iron Bark, but it is possible that the lignotubers are the tree's way of compensating for its restricted root system. It will be interesting to see whether they continue to form all the way up the trunk.

Over the next couple of seasons I am hoping to reduce them two about half.

I should have guessed that the pot was one of PK's - it's a ripper. As for the Pom: in the last photo I can see a dog looking on in the background, and made the rash assumption that it is a Pomeranian.

You've got better eye sight than me but yes we have 1 long haired pom, 1 maltese/pom cross,
1 maltese/poodle cross and 1 baorder collie ( Blue).


I still quite a few PK pots I haven't used yet ( still many projects in the back yard to fill them). Every time I see Pat I buy 1 or 2.
