Gday guys,
Just wanting to know about your experience with chinese Elm cuttings and layers. I have access to a mature Chinese Elm which is about to have a meeting with the arborist in the next 6 months or so. My plan is to layer some big branches and take some large cuttings.

I'd like to know the girth of layers that people have been successful with and also the same with cuttings.

This is a massive tree and I plan on taking 20, 30, maybe 40 big layers!

Also, do you think I'm too late in the season to put layers on now?

Hi Webos, I have struck 25-50mm thick cuttings of Chinese Elm and Corky Bark Elm using bottom heat planted in July-August and up to 25mm thick planted November-January using mist or fogging in a polytunnel. Cutting media was 0.5-2mm diatomite. It is important if you are going with oversize cuttings, to find plant material that has a bit of taper to begin with.

I have done layers only about 2" myself.
Would think you could layer easily up to to 6" or so

Cutting I have never tried big ones, but woud think they are easy to strike
