After the chop I wired some of the branches out and also the new leader to grow on for a season or two, but i don't seem to have taken a pic of that...

I have also taken a few cuttings from the part I took off, so I will be able to do some root grafts in the future.

Hmmm
Looks like there are a couple of versions of the Taiwan Maple for sale in Australia.
Some friends of mine bought a few last year as bare rooted and they have a leaf similar to that of a Japanese Maple but larger leaf and only five lobes. The leaf also has a reddish tinge. Yours looks more like a Trident Maple leaf.
Perhaps Mr Nishiki can help here

Looks like a Taiwanese Maple to me.
The real give away is the thicker leaf; it is quite a lot tougher and leathery than the normal trident maple. It should get very good autumn color in Canberra.

Thanks Grant and Leigh
Yes Grant def thicker leaf and coarser growth by the looks of the new shoots, I am very much looking forward to its future autumn colour, that is one of the reasons I got hold of it.
Rob, I didn't Airlayer it because I have far too many trees already!
Are you in Canberra? If you are you can have some.

hey there is some confusion with species of maples because there can be many sub species and cultivars, your maple is a trident but it is a sub specie of trident called Acer buergerianum var. formosanum, hence the taiwanese maple
formosanum was probably selected for its exceptional autumn colour. Also with a lot of acer sub species they can be grown from seed like your tree.
