Hello,

I have stumbled across another Fig that i thought could be put to use as appose to being throw in the bin.
Its the second one ive brought home form my parents where it was growing in their gutter, heres the first:

I was wondering if someone could tell me where to cut this one back to, and what sort of potting mix would be good.

WOW! It must have been a while since your parent's gutters were cleaned.
I am glad you asked this question as I too have many figs of different species that I can collect. I have been taking them back pretty hard first of all but I wonder if I should not be so harsh initially in order to grow them on ASAP and to more of the cut and dice at some later stages???

yer its all on one side, they just had a camphor laurel lopped next to theyre house and these were beneath it, so i salvaged them.

For now, I'd only be cutting it back enough to go into a styrene box. Let it recover and then on the next repot, cut them back to the desired length. I think it might need all the energy it has stored in those lower trunks to help it recover. I'd also clip those snapped branches back nice and neat.

Have to say, it does look interesting. Do you know what species it is VS?

To risk guessing i'd say moreton bay fig, but im a babe in the woods (pardon the pun) with plants.

those multiple trunks dont offer alot but why dont you try a page out of jamies book and do as fusion? i tryed some and they are going well, these were just small saplings with not alot of potential.

I using plastic bags cut into strip but you can use grafting tape, or even raffia or bike inner tube and wire it at the same time and put some movement into the trunks.

you will achieve a faster trunk girth and induce movement in one small step, jamie got his to fuse within 6 weeks, mine have been on for about 3 months now and im considering leaving them longer as rain and weather have been very strange here on the mid north coast.

I plant mine a diatomite and soil mix (about 70-30) but you can throw in zeolite, or even plant in straight diatomite.

Figs love dynamic lifter, and fertilize and water regularly and you should have some fairly intense growth in a few weeks.

soaking and then watering in every week with seasol or or superthrive will help root develop quicker and get you growth happening faster.

If you wanted to ventur into trying to create nebari now you could do a toothpick treatment (search the site for toothpick and you will see what i mean) and that way when you next repot you can cut off the long unusable roots and use the roots where you put the toothpicks.

Hey guys/gals,

I hacked my newest fig this morn, potted it with a mix of 95% potting mix 5% coco peat, watered it with a diluted seasol mix.
I think i may start a fusion after discussing it with my better half, so how long till i start binding the trunks together???

For something different completely remove the left hand roots and pot into a length of down pipe (about 300 mm long )then place upright in a growing pot- grow on for a year or so -could end up with a decent exposed root or root on rock semi-cascade

thanks for the suggestion and i like the idea so i amy try that later on, but for now im a little obsessed with idea of a fusin, so im going to pursue that for now.

type in fusing figs, or fusion into the search bar and you will find lots of information.

Hi guys this is how my triple trunk fig looks as of today.


Any suggestions on where to chop and what to leave would be appreciated, the fused trunk is still on the cards to.

Hi Drew
For the moment I would put it into a styro box with a free draining mix (I use 40% Diatomite) and feed it with DL. It needs to grow a fair bit before you can do much with it.
