Turning yellow

I have a tree given to me from a friend. It has been healthy for the last 4-5 months but is now starting to turn yellow on the bottom half.
It gets full sun from the morning but shade from midday onwards.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers - Craig.

Do you have any pictures?
Not that they will help me tell you what is going on but I'm sure it will help others.

Sorry, no pics, camera is dead.
The top half is green but the bottom half is yellow and dying off, many of the yellow branches are very brittle.

What type of tree, is it a juniper?

I dare say - not enough light for the under branches! More sun and food! Maybe thin out the top a little.
Cheers,
Leigh.

It's a sequoia.

The branches that are turning yellow aren't in much shadow from the higher branches, will try more sun.
The main thing I have found is that they don't like to dry out to much and prefer moist/wet soil.

I'm sure someone with some more experience will turn up soon, however, in the mean time it could be a root problem, take a look at:
http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/rootprun.htm
And if you have some time on your hands check out:
http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/articles.htm
It's a really really basic site, and has no pictures

but the articles are really well written and easy to understand

A few things come to mind.
1, any chance you are overwatering it? I know they like a fair amount of water but if your soil is too damp most of the time it may be drowning. Hint - with these trees, the foliage turns reddish if they are underwatered.
2, At this time of year, and with the extra water many trees are getting now, a flush of growth can cause conifers to shed older foliage.
3, Too much shade - but I don't think this is your problem
4, too hot or cold - probably not your problem
Just my opinion on some things to think about. I haven't had one for many years so I am a bit out of touch with them.
Cheers,
Rowan
