hi im looking for advice on post dig care for a jacaranda i dug up from my front yard. all i have read so far about yamadori that seems to be universal to all species is to soak them in seasol overnight, as this is my first try im looking for any advice i can get thanks. hears some pics.

Hmmm, which way's up.
Its a bit late in the season for transplanting. Anyways, i guess you have prepared your potting mix before your did the dig .

A. Put your tree in a grow box or pot .
B.Now sit that in a tub of seasol and place all of the above in a shady position till you get some new growth on it.
c.Then slowly introduce some filtered sun to your tree.
D. Let your tree grow for a couple of seasons.

thanks thats basically what i figured.

for those that want to know this is a part of a surface root that was constantly hit with the lawn mower and the wipper snipper, so its got alot of lumps and bumps. the last pic is of the top and the 2nd is the front 3rd is the back the 1st is of the top at a slight angle from the front. hopefully it produces something interesting

That looks an interesting piece of wood. I have a few jacaranda growing but have never tried a root cutting, which this is. As far as timing you should still be ok, they are best worked just after flowering in late october/november. Even really big specimens can be butchered & dug at that time with out too much hassle. I have done repotting and major root work at this time of year without too much hassle, tho you do need to give them more care until they are going strong again.

One thing from Petra's post i would like to clarify, you soak the piece in seasol then pot up DO NOT sit the pot in a bath of seasol permanently, roots need air as well as water to be able to grow. Only water when the soil starts to get a little dry when you stick your finger in it and use seasol with each watering to give it the best chance.

Jacaranda are one of my favorite trees & look forward to hearing if you have success with this piece. It is an interesting base to start from.

I think you meant tray not tub

In general I dont like to sit anything in a water tray, tho do have a few bits & pieces that absolutely have to have them (for a variety of reasons) & your right climate will play a huge part in that. Many growers also use them as personal circumstance do not allow them as much time to devote to their trees (work, family commitments etc).

just so i know if ive done it right or wrong. i sat it in a tub of seasol for a couple of hours this is just the tree i then put it in a grow box and watered with the seasol it had been sitting in and put the box in the shade. i hope this is right and thanks for the advice.

just a little update i just dug another one out to try and grow as well figured if im digging out a stump might as well get everything i can out of it.

Now you really have me intrigued... Its easier with this second piece to understand what your hoping to achieve.. I think..???

If it shoots at various points you could have a really nice raft in no time or turtle back ..or.. or.. or..

Now seeing as your going all out I would try a different medium for each successive 'cutting'.. so if the first is in soil .. try the second in Propogating sand or something else...

Please keep this updated as soon as there is any movement, it opens up a whole new source of stock for one of my favorites.

a quick update i believe they are still alive as the bark is still green and moist but no shoots yet

Thanks for the update...It could take up to a year or more to make up its mind. I would put it out in the sun to help stimulate growth and all you can do is just water when needed and wait... Welcome to bonsai
