My first tree - Olive

Okay, I went to my local 'Bonsai' store and procured my first stick...
To my untrained eye this one appeared to be the best of the bunch at $55, with plenty of promising new growth. I realise I probably paid too much, but the guy gave me lots of advice and has offered to show me how to fertilise and root prune in 3 months time. For no additional charge.

Tree Height: 1ft
Trunk Width: 1in
Exposed Root Width: 3in
Container dimensions: H3in, W8in, D6in

Firstly, I believe the existing trunk leans forward too far - should this be removed?
Secondly, I assume the first advice will be to remove the extra trunks and ground growth?
Any and all constructive comments for a newbie will be taken on board.
Thank you in advance.

Great job picking this one.

Its way better than my first tree and looks to be healthy, a huge plus!

Before cutting anything, you need to have a look at some examples of olive bonsai. There are some great ones on here you just have to search.

Check out Ozzy's posts, he has some great ones.

There is a great example here too: http://bonsaitonight.com/

It just depends on you views for its future. If you find some pics of what you would like it to look like post them here and there will be someone here to help you get there.

I suggest you get some fertiliser like Nitrosol and Osmocote and feed it up!

Scott.

Nice choice. There's no such thing as being overcharged *waits for the flak  * If you thought it is worth what you were prepared to pay then it is good, otherwise you wouldn't have bought it. What is a bargain for me may not be for someone else and vice versa, it is all subjective.

Anyway - an olive is a great first tree, they are tough - and if you chop of something that you regret later it will throw out new shoots so you can regrow the branch. I'm sure you will have fun with this one. Well done

Cheers,
Rowan

If it were mine I would cut it were shown, rotate it in the pot and get it going in this sort of a direction ...
