The roots will fuse over time but on this one it is going to be difficult to get the two roots close together without one of them getting damaged or even break off.

These roots form new roots on the thick roots very easily - why not cover them up again with soil. To aid the new roots to form I would also tourniquet the current roots at ground level.

You will have one fat trunk with a lot of texture if you can get the roots to form.

Here is one of mine(old photo) to show how easily roots form:

hi lennard
thanks for input i was lookng and if i did fuse the trunks it would make the roots very thick at top and thin at bottom so
what i was thinking was to bury it deeper and try to get new roots growing and train them to spread and let it sit for a few years in the
corner of the yard and just let it grow grow and grow

Hi there,
I had a fig very similar to yours given to me a few years back I actually think mine was a bit ruder.
Anyway I barerooted the tree took the bark off the inside of his legs and strapped him together with cable ties.
He has fused together and I have included a pic for you to see what he looked like after a few months, but I'm still not happy with his shape and may bury him a bit to get some new roots,
So yes they will fuse..
goodluck
