Hey guys,
am contemplating buying a brown fruit fig tree at big W today. Its not grafted, but has already fruit on. Question is, do these leaves reduce, & will the trunk be easily manipulated :?:

brown turkey figs grow everywhere around here, bloody annoying things they are. There are 2 down the road estimated to be over 100 years old, all twisted and contorted. they do not look like a fig at all but 4 buckets of figs confirm that :tu:

You and me both Bodhi, no worries.
I was a bit confused, as i read that the flowers are in the fruit & we dont get to see them. If someone can confirm that, please let us know.

Noah, i know what id be doing if i was there. They strike easily from cuttings, also are very quick in growing. Lucky you mate. :tu2:

I have 3 big fig trees at home, and indeed they are prolific growers. I pruned my biggest one last season so I could walk underneath it when when I mowed the lawn. Now the branches are about waist height. But I never thought about using for bonsai, because of the large leaves. These babies alway push out suckers that I just mow over, maybe I should save a few.

I have never worked with this species but I have seen bonsai done with this material.
My conclusion is that the large leaves and coarse branching will make shaping out a bonsai difficult but not impossible.
Keep us posted on your efforts.

Petra you are correct about fig flowers. A whole bunch of tiny flowers inside the developing fruit that go on to produce the seeds. Supposed to be pollinated by tiny wasps that get inside the developing fruit. Cut open a fruit and have a look at the structure.
I get seedlings here all the time from visiting birds. I potted a couple up but they have not done too well - very prone to drying out in summer and do not seem to appreciate wet feet either. My opinion - plenty of better plants to waste time on.
