Dead trunks get second chance as display stands?

Hey Everyone,
I have had a few old dead trunks from old bonsai of mine lying around for a little while now (don't get me wrong, they didn't die by fertiliser root burn, underwatering, over styling and cutbacks horribly timed with the incorrect season or anything due to my impatience....no not at all). I kept them for some possible deadwood wrappings of young trees, but one night decided to try something.

I got my saw out and sliced a flat plane through their old roots so they'd sit flat on a surface, then gave the trunk a second flat slice just above the trunk splitting into branches. I smoothed out the saw cut with my dremel sander, then placed a thin sliver of wood for a top and presto!

A weird kind of mame display stand?

These trunks are about 8 cm tall, so they're small and would only work with mame's. Now I still haven't made up my mind If i think it actually WORKS as a display element, but it was fun experimenting and I thought i'd share it anyway...Some of you no doubt have some old dead bonsai at home (not implying any assumption of unskilled-ness of any bonsaiers of course), so try it out if it tickles your fancy. It's pretty easy to do.

An azalea that didn't make it post trunk chop.

Another azalea, that had a great future. She would have been a prized mame in another life, but I fertilised her wrongly. Please forgive me azalea.

The cuts on the base sanded down to be flat and stable.

A virtual using a mame from an image search. (I didn't have a good mame to fit for the photo's purpose).

A trunk base from a great little tree who's species my memory can't seem to recall. But for stand purposes, it's wide almost tentacle-like roots looks pretty cool.

that's it!
See ya all,

They look really good, just need to seal them to stop rot. perhaps you could sand one back and bleach/stain it?

Ahh, well i didn't intend them to be used outside, only indoors when on display. And that saves having to seal them up. BUT, a sanded back one and bleach'stain would definately change it up, it could look really cool.

thanks Sean Mitchell1

and I'm glad you liked them petra and dragon!
