Hi all ,
I checked a few Air Layers today. My Juniper A/L are just starting to show a small amount of roots.I am unsure if i should leave till next spring or go for it now ?
Also the Sphagnum Moss seems to be very ,very, wet ,especially the lower two that are on the horizontal . I checked the rest of my A/L (Swampy ,Black Pine ,Cedar ) they are starting to callous up but they too seem very ,very ,wet.
Any advice would be apreciated .

Perhaps it would be best to leave it till mid spring until those roots develop some more.
Have you done any ground layering with these?
If so, how did you go about it?

Hi boom , dont be too eager to remove it .Best to leave until the new roots turn to a darker brownish colour . At present they are easily damaged and may not support the growth .When removed dont try to remove the spagnum moss simply pot it up and let it grow for another season .I have had many a good layer has failed trying to remove too early " No Choice" or by removing the moss and damaging the roots .Cheers Alpineart

I woud leave them this late in the season unless youare in Brissy

the moss tho is a concern, Why is it so wet? It shodu be just damp really
You might have some problem over winter with it that wet

Have you got puncture holes in the bottom of the layer to let out water?

Thanks for the feedback Alpineart,Ken,Mick and Damien.Sorry have not done any ground layers on these .
I will not do anything till the bag is full of nice brown roots ,like you say Alpine must not be to hasty.I will puncture some holes at the bottoms and might try and tighten the tops a little more.I have some A/L on some trees at my parents (Nashi Pear ,Nectarine and some Junipers) and when i checked them at christmas ,they to were very wet ,so maybe i might have to modify my approach .
Once again thanks for the help,its one of those things you dont seem to read about . Maybe you have to learn by trial and error
