Just want to confirm these before I proceed:

1. For Acacia Howittii Prostrate, do we use Fertilizer for Natives only or just the normal fertilizer? or does it matter?
2. Do they respond well to severe root pruning? The one I got is in a very deep pot which I imtend to change it to a much shallower one. That require a severe root pruning. I noticed that they have very fine and fibrous root system.

Hi Bonbon,

The Acacia here gets the same liquid fortnightly feed as all the rest; Power Feed or Nitrosol or equiv plus Seasol most times as well.

We trim the roots semi hard about every three years and I would use Native Osmocote as well but normal would be OK as well.

Current soil mix is the previous owners blend which is very fine but seems to go OK.

repotting and pruning have worked well soon after flowering is over. We have also had success with doing the same in early April (Canberra time - so already cooling down). Gave it a fairly severe prune first time - was in a large 500 mm pot, cut off, with a saw, about two thirds of the roots from the bottom and then about half from the sides. It started regrowing within a couple weeks.

There is no need to restrict the phosporous intake (ferts for natives), as you might do with Banksias and related, though the Acacia will get by on which ever fert you give it. It just soaks it up, along with any water within cooee. Withstands 'drought' pretty well too, but don't over do that ;)
