Hi all

I'm a huge fan of Erin pottery pots, and recently purchased a few to try out some new ideas. The main purchase however was the pot for this particular PJ fig.

I was a little shocked when the pot first arrived, as it was MUCH smaller than the old pot this fig had been sitting in. But after my initial shock I had a brainwave and decided to try rest the bonsai on a mound of soil.

I'm kind of OK with it actually, as I've always enjoyed the look of Bonsai on mounds. Yet, as I've never done this before, maybe there are some things I'm not considering in the transition...?

Despite the obvious pruning requirements, what does everyone else think?

I like the tree, especially the roots. Mounds look pretty when covered with moss otherwise the soil just washes off . Then if the moss dries out it will repel water so you need to keep it damp and in a semi shaded area.

Personally I think it sits too high in the pot. If you haven't trimmed the rootball I would trim it back and over time continue to trim and have it sit lower in the pot. Or leave it if you like it - it's your bonsai after all. My preference for figs is to have them in trays as opposed to deep pots.

Thanks for your comments everyone. And Lennard, you sold me with the photo comparison! While I love Bonsai on huge mounds, I can see how much difference it aesthetically makes to have the curve of the mound reflect the curve of the pot.

Come late winter/early spring, I'm definitely going to action the harder root prune to settle the tree lower into the pot.

When I repotted, I noticed that some of the exposed roots were extremely thick, so I was reluctant to do anything until later this year (as I've never pruned massive roots before).
