Here's another image, of how to construct a trunk line or give a branch movement.
This was also something I struggled understanding early on. In a zig-zag fashion you choose alternating shoots to establish the curves.
Very basic, but you got to start somewhere.

The mrs reckons I would not know one end of a broom from the other.

One other i Really want to see , is a good graphic on the internal structure / layers of a tree, eg
Heartwood, Sapwood, Cambium, Phloem, Bark ( anything else I have forgotten) ?
