Hi All,

Can anyone give me some tips on air layering a bouganvillia. I'd like to know how large can you can go when air layering as I've located a boug with a trunk almost a foot in diameter with branches that have unbelievable character and movement. If there is any techniques that will work better than others for boug's I'd like to get some advise.

I have only last week taken off off my Dads Bougie

I ringbarked it, Wrapped in Sphagnum moss and then wrapped in Glad wrap.
The hardest thing you will find is actually holding the moss on while trying to wrap it. You will need about 10 hands I think , But shodu work verry well

Don't bother with airlayering. Cutting of any size with take easily!!!

Is it best to have cuttings that are defoliated in larger sizes?

Would it also be better to wait until the warmer months to take these cuttings or can I use a heating pad in a green house?

Also what is tthe biggest cutting you've taken on a boug and had it take root?

I did a cutting last year that was 100mm in dia and it went well. I always leave a couple of leaves on as I reckon there is no incentive for the cutting to root without them. The only thing is cuttings are not successful 100% of the time - so if you can air layer I would do it. I had to take that cutting as my mate had sold his house. Even though it doesn't get really cold up here I would leave it until about October now.

I left all the leaves and branches on mine and was 5" and bigger should be no problem.
I Caboolture I reckon you put them on now and take them off in a few months.
Just keep them protected till spring.
