Dean , Silver Birch is deciduous isn't it, i would wait till spring when they weather warms up, i'm pretty sure they are sensitive to root pruning aswell,
others may have more ideas,

Hi Dean
Wait till end of winter early spring when the buds start to swell but before leaves open. Can go hard then.

As a side note Dean;
Silver birch trees should receive minimal pruning, as they produce excess sap from cut wounds, and this can weaken or kill the tree if too many branches are removed.
