Here a some shots of a Red pine I bought last year. It dates from 1965 and was trained from 1969 onwards. It was in pretty dreadful condition by the time I got it.

HI Grant , You beat me to this one I first saw this tree at G World three years ago, it then ended up in Sydney it looks as if it is still in the same pot love to see it when you have worked on it.

Yes I was amazed when I saw it in Sydney. I had seen it in Melborne and told the owners it was a great tree but needed two or three days worth of work. Their head bonsai person agreed and so instead they sold it?

Arthur R ( the man who sold it to them ) was prepared to work on it for free but they declined his offer.

Anyhow I will show you what I have done already in an article and thank god there are no Jin on this one, but maybe a bit of shari eventually though.

Looking through galleries, I havnt seen too many Red pines with jin, but a lot with shari.

The top side of the trunk very close to the base has shari but I am not sure if it was accidental or on purpose. You can't see it in the photos and it won't be a major part of the design. I have seen a few trees badly sunburnt and die on that part of the trunk so who knows.

Here is the first bit of wiring and you can see the skeleton of the tree better.
I will have to see if I have more photos on the other computer.

Any how the tree was in much better condition by the time I got around to wiring it and I just proceeded to cut out the dead and weak branches and wire everything else right out to the tips, and then proceeded to place the branches.

The tree was repotted in spring and has grown very lushly since then (six months) without any trimming back or excessive candle reduction. I wanted to get vigor back into this old tree. Next year I will work on getting the needles and internodes short again but in a healthy way.

I will definately get it photographed by next weekend which I hope to have free.

Ok, here are some more photos of the Red Pine.

Photo 1 shows the wiring mostly done and ready to be positioned.



Photo no 3 shows the tree repotted and growing healthilly, if somewhat overgrown now.

The tree was in poor condition when I bought it and so I have considered the health of the tree above all in this exercise. The repot of the tree has dramatically improved the health of the tree and it will now be able to be cut back hard in late spring/early summer. This will force out new shorter needled growth and allow me to further micro position the branches.

Comments and correspondence welcome.

One thing I noted that to me is interesting, you did not wire the tips upwards on all of the branches. It does not really have that layered feel to it, like many other European pines have.

Was there any reason for this?
