This was planted in my parents backyard about 15 years ago. My old man is adamant that it is a Crab Apple but i think it might be a Flowering Plum.
I'm planning on doin an air layer on this so does anyone know what time of year would be best for it?

It looks more like a plum to me. There is several of these trees at the end of my street and they produce a plum like fruit...not that it looks very appealing for eating.
One tree threw a sucker root which grew reasonably tall which I removed and separated into two plants. Both of which are growing strong. They produce a very nice white flower which covers the entire tree.
Good luck with the Airlayer.

Hi NakMuay,
Seems to me to be a plum, more than likely Prunus nigra [ Black Plum ).
Click on the links below for more information ( thanks Wikipedia !!)
and a similar pic to your tree, as a comparison.

Its a plum Nak. I know a little about plums and they are notoriously difficult to air layer - not impossible, but diffucult. They generally take quite some time to root and need extra TLC to get them to establish.
But give it a try and let us know how you go.
