Hi all I am a beginner at this really. I would like to know what time of the year to pot a Beech I have purchased from the garden shop. Also it is in a fairly big container how much of the root should I take off. Thanks all what a GREAT site.

I have not had any Beech myself, but would treat them just like any other Deciduous tree.
Repot and Rootprune in Late winter Early spring when the new buds are swelling and about to burst.

Again I assume you could take off up to 1/3 - 1/2 the rootball but wait till other confirm that

Wire now so it can be on all thru winter into spring if you need

i have a beech what KC said is right .make sure when you repot it give it good drainage i near lost mine 3 years ago through root rot , I dragged it out of pot gave it some more
sand in a new mix and it is well on its way to a solid recovery
By the way where in tassie are you ?

is it solid or grafted?I find grafted trees difficult to style---when you repot and prune try to strike as many cuttings as possible

Hi mate thats unbelievable I have been think for weeks about getting one. Have seen them in books. I used to live in Westbury and that whole area is full of them. Id love to got with you, no dont mind getting down and dirty at all. Would be GREAT. Ger

Hi there,
beech are one of my favourites and I've had quite a few over the years .With repotting,the beech can be quite late to bud as opposed to other species so it's best to wait until the buds start to swell before attempting any repotting (can be at least 1 month into Spring depending on location).Allow the tree to grow out and develop a good root system for the first year and then begin training in the second,although only moderate (heavier training should be witheld until atleast the third year).This tree can test your patience if you're aiming for the "quick fix" (eg-wack a tree in a pot and call it a bonsai within a few years) but if you're willing to learn some saint like patience ,then the beech will not dissapoint..
